Kaitlyn Bristowe recently opened up about her Valium addiction, and how her life was turned upside down following a bad breakup with her ex-boyfriend. The reality star claimed her addiction to Valium got much worse once she slipped into a deep depression.
Page Six reported on Wednesday that the 34-year-old reality star struggled through some “heavy” and “dark times,” which led her to get help from a doctor following her return to Canada from Europe. Bristowe’s ex-boyfriend was playing hockey there.
Kaitlyn, who was 27-years-old at the time, said she was suicidal as a consequence of her very traumatic breakup. Bristowe went on to say that it felt like she lost everything; as if nothing in her life mattered anymore and it was all over.
Rather than recommend her to a therapist or perhaps a personal trainer, Bristowe’s doctor gave her an anti-depressant and Valium, which are typically used to fight against anxiety disorders and other high-stress emotions.
Regarding her experience taking Valium, Kaitlyn said it “made (her) numb,” and she hardly felt anything anymore, which in some way, was actually good for her because she no longer felt any emotional pain. However, her diet and lifestyle suffered tremendously from substance abuse.
Eventually, someone close to her shook her and said that she couldn’t continue living like that. She then chose to feel her feelings again and decided it was no longer appropriate for her to be taking Valium to fight off her emotions.
From there, she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, and started working in the restaurant industry. She later appeared on The Bachelor and was on the Chris Soules season back in 2015. In the same year, she then went on to become The Bachelorette for the series’ eleventh season.

According to Bristowe, there was a silver lining to all of it. Kaitlyn claims she learned that one has to rely on themselves to be happy, and not others. Since her breakup and subsequent fame on reality television, Bristowe started dating Jason Tartick.
